March is always a busy and productive month here at the nursery as spring begins to gather momentum. With the soil slowly warming and daylight increasing, many plants are starting to show fresh growth and the season’s work is well underway. One of the main jobs this month has been dividing and rejuvenating our herbaceous perennials. It is an ideal time of year for splitting established clumps, helping to keep plants vigorous while also producing healthy new stock. We have been busy dividing varieties of Asters, Kniphofias, Geraniums, Geums and Iris, all reliable garden perennials that perform well in a wide range of conditions. Propagation work is also continuing in the nursery. Young seedlings of Tulbaghia and Selenium are currently being carefully pricked out and potted on, giving them the space they need to develop into strong, well-rooted plants ready for the coming growing season. Another important seasonal task is trimming back the old growth on our ornamental grasses. Overwintered grasses such as Miscanthus, Calamagrostis and Pennisetum are being cut back now to allow the fresh new shoots of spring to emerge and flourish. At the same time, our coastal hedging plants are beginning to put on their first flush of spring growth. Early spring is one of the best times to plant hedging, allowing plants to establish well before the drier conditions of summer arrive. March is a month of preparation, propagation and planning, and it sets the foundation for the busy months ahead. It is always encouraging to see the nursery coming back to life after winter, with fresh growth appearing across the beds and in the tunnels. Thank you to everyone who continues to support the nursery and coastalhedging.co.uk. We look forward to another productive season supplying hardy plants for coastal gardens.
